When children are doing nothing they are doing mischief. (H. Fielding)
I fully agree with this quotation and I think that it concerns not only children, but also adults.
We all know that a normal man’s state, if only he is not sleeping, is an active state. During man’s life he always occupies himself with some sort of activity – he works, goes in for sport, plays, reads, and communicates with other people and so on. It is just impossible to imagine a man’s life without some activity. Personal development and the process of socialization, i.e. assimilation of social experience by a person, takes place when the person is involved in some activity, which provides him not only with knowledge and useful information, but also which contributes to his perception of the outward things, creation of vitally important conditions without which he can’t live – food, clothes, dwelling. In the course of activity a man changes surrounding reality, with its help he converts everything in order then to make the most of these reforms. Man’s activity moulds, changes and influences on the man himself, his will, character and abilities. Besides activity develops such mental processes as attention, memory, thinking, perception and imagination.
So speaking about the child’s activity we must admit that since childhood parents should inspire him to different kinds of work. Of course, these activities shouldn’t be thrust on the child, but parents ought to set him on the right track taking into account his entire propensity, tastes and faculties. If a child is doing nothing, he is not developing either physically or mentally. He is doing considerable harm to himself, as he remains in the same level of development and subsequently he will not be able to fulfill himself, attain to his goals.
Besides, if a child is doing nothing and their parents ignore it, I can say that hereafter such parents will regret their negligence and lack of parental supervision. These children grow into dependent, inert and infirm. Does any parent want their children to be like these? I am entirely sure that nobody wants.
Accordingly activity is a way and a condition of a child’s development. The parents are responsible for their children and that’s why they must exercise due concern and attention to this problem.
Being a future parent I ought to pay attention to this issue, as I don’t want my children to suffer from my own mistakes.
